A radical plan to heat homes and buildings in Swansea’s Maritime Quarter using spare heat from a nearby wastewater treatment works is being seriously explored by planners and energy bosses.
The idea sounds simple enough. A network of underground pipes would carry excess heat generated at a sewage treatment facility on the outskirts of the city directly into buildings across the Maritime Quarter. Rather than that heat going to waste, it would be put to work keeping people warm.
It is the kind of forward-thinking energy solution that cities across Europe have been rolling out for years, and Swansea looks like it could be next in line to give it a proper go.
District heat networks like this one work by capturing thermal energy that would otherwise be lost and distributing it across a connected system of insulated pipes. The wastewater treatment process naturally generates a significant amount of heat, and right now most of that just disappears into the atmosphere. Tapping into that resource could make a real dent in the carbon footprint of the Maritime Quarter, which is one of Swansea’s most recognisable and visited areas.

For residents and businesses in the Maritime Quarter, the prospect of cheaper, cleaner heating will be an attractive one.
