Newport Drug Dealer Walks Free With Suspended Sentence After Cannabis Bust

A Newport man caught with cannabis and hundreds of pounds in cash has avoided jail after admitting he was dealing drugs.

Klejdi Gjana, 24, was handed a 20-week suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply, as well as holding onto £600 in criminal cash.

Gjana was essentially caught red-handed, with both the drugs and the money found in his possession. The £600 in cash was linked directly to his dealing activity, prosecutors said.

Despite admitting to both offences, the 24-year-old walked out of court without serving any immediate prison time. The suspended sentence means he could still be locked up if he breaks the terms set by the court, but for now he remains free.

Drug dealing in Newport and across South Wales has been a persistent problem for local police, with officers regularly targeting street-level dealers as part of wider efforts to disrupt supply chains in the region. Cases like this one, where dealers are caught holding both product and cash, are considered strong evidence of active supply rather than simple personal use.

Possessing cannabis with intent to supply carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in the UK, though sentencing in practice varies widely depending on the scale of the operation and the defendant’s personal circumstances.
