A teenager described as “bright and funny” has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in a lake during a day out with friends in Wales.
The 17-year-old, whose name has not yet been officially released, was with a group of six friends when the tragedy unfolded. Emergency services were called to the scene, but the teen could not be saved.
Tributes have since flooded in for the young man, with those who knew him painting a picture of a popular and lively character who had his whole life ahead of him.
Open water swimming has long been a popular activity during warmer months, particularly among young people looking for a day out during school holidays. But safety experts have repeatedly warned that lakes, rivers and reservoirs carry serious hidden dangers that even strong swimmers can underestimate.
Water temperatures in Welsh lakes can remain bitterly cold even during summer, and cold water shock is one of the leading causes of drowning in the UK. The condition can cause an involuntary gasp reflex and sudden loss of muscle control within seconds of entering cold water, making it extremely difficult to stay afloat regardless of swimming ability.
Hidden currents, sudden drops in depth and submerged debris are also common hazards in open water that simply do not exist in a controlled swimming pool environment.
The Royal Life Saving Society UK has consistently highlighted that the majority of drowning victims did not plan to enter the water, and that many who do choose to swim outdoors are unaware of just how quickly conditions can turn dangerous.
Wales has seen a number of similar tragedies in recent years, with young people in particular drawn to beauty spots and lakes during hot spells. Campaigns by water safety charities have urged people to only swim in designated open water sites where lifeguards are present, and to never swim alone or in remote locations without telling someone where they are going.
The friends who witnessed the incident are likely to be receiving support following the traumatic events of what had started as a simple day out.
An investigation into the exact circumstances of the teenager’s death is expected to be carried out, as is standard procedure following any sudden or unexplained death.
Police and rescue services attended the scene, and the matter has been referred to the coroner.
The local community has been left devastated by the loss, with many paying tribute online to a young man who by all accounts had a bright future ahead of him. Friends and family have described their heartbreak, remembering him as someone full of life and humour.
Water safety charities are urging anyone planning to swim outdoors this summer to check whether a location is safe before entering the water, to go with others, to stay close to the shore and to call 999 immediately if someone gets into difficulty rather than attempting a rescue alone.
