How HRT Saved Our Marriage: ‘We Were Nearly Done, Now We Can’t Keep Our Hands Off Each Other’

Antonia and Rob had been together for years, but by the time the menopause hit alongside work pressures and the chaos of raising kids, their marriage was hanging by a thread. The sex life they once had disappeared almost completely. Divorce felt like a real possibility. Then came HRT, and everything changed.

Antonia, now in her early fifties, describes the years leading up to starting hormone replacement therapy as a slow, painful decline. The menopause crept up on her gradually, draining her energy, her mood and her desire. Work stress piled on top. The kids needed constant attention. Sex was the last thing on her mind, and that distance between her and Rob started to feel permanent.

‘It was like I had completely lost myself,’ she says. ‘I wasn’t interested in anything, let alone being intimate with my husband. We were barely talking properly, let alone anything else. There were serious conversations about whether we had a future together.’

Rob tried to be understanding, but it was hard. The couple had always had a strong physical connection earlier in their relationship, and watching it fade was difficult for both of them. He felt shut out. She felt guilty but helpless. It became a cycle that neither of them knew how to break.

The turning point came when Antonia finally spoke to her GP about what she was experiencing. After years of pushing through and assuming it was just stress or tiredness, she was prescribed HRT. Within weeks, she started to feel like herself again.

‘It was genuinely like someone had switched a light back on,’ she says. ‘My energy came back. My mood lifted. And then, slowly, so did my interest in Rob.’

What happened next surprised them both. Not only did their sex life return, it came back stronger than it had been in years. Antonia went from having almost no interest in intimacy to becoming, by her own admission, the more eager one in the relationship.

‘We’ve completely switched roles,’ she laughs. ‘Rob jokes that I want to do it every day now. It’s become this funny thing between us, but honestly, it’s not far from the truth. I feel like I’m making up for lost time.’

For Rob, the transformation has been both a relief and a pleasant shock. After years of feeling like he was walking on eggshells and trying not to put pressure on Antonia, he suddenly found himself in a completely different dynamic.

‘He’s been brilliant about the whole thing,’ Antonia says. ‘He never made me feel bad during the difficult years, even though I know it was hard for him. And now he’s just happy. We both are.’

The couple say the experience has actually made them closer than they were even before the menopause hit. Going through such a rough patch and coming out the other side has given them a new appreciation for each other. They talk more openly now, about everything, including their sex life, which Antonia says was never really the case before.

‘We had to get quite honest with each other during the bad years just to survive as a couple,’ she says. ‘That honesty has stayed. We communicate so much better now, and I think that’s part of why things are so good between us.’

Antonia is keen to share her story because she knows how many women suffer through the menopause without seeking help, either because they don’t realise what’s happening to them or because they feel embarrassed to bring it up with a doctor. She spent years assuming she just had to get on with it.

‘I wish I had gone to my GP sooner,’ she says. ‘I lost years feeling awful when I didn’t have to. HRT isn’t for everyone and it’s not a magic fix, but for me it genuinely saved my marriage and gave me my life back. Women need to know that help is out there.’

  1. Honestly this is so lovely to read. Menopause nearly broke my parents marriage too and nobody talked about it back then. So glad more couples are being open about this sort of thing.
