Members of the Claremont Rambling Club recently made their way to one of Perthshire’s most scenic spots, the Braes o’ Killiekrankie, and were rewarded with the kind of day that makes you remember why Scotland is worth every bit of the hype.
The group, joined by a number of visitors, were treated to constant sunshine as they made their way through the stunning Highland Perthshire landscape. For anyone who knows the area, you’ll understand just how special that is. The Braes o’ Killiekrankie sit within the Pass of Killiekrankie, a dramatic wooded gorge carved out by the River Garry, and on a clear sunny day there are few places in Scotland that can match it.
Killiekrankie is steeped in history as well as natural beauty. The pass is famous as the site of the 1689 Battle of Killiekrankie, where Jacobite forces under Viscount Dundee defeated government troops in one of the most dramatic clashes of the era. These days it draws walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and history buffs in equal measure, and the National Trust for Scotland manages much of the surrounding area.
For the Claremont Rambling Club, it was simply a brilliant day out. The combination of good weather, great company and breathtaking scenery made for exactly the kind of walk that keeps people coming back to the hills and glens of Perthshire time and again.
Perthshire has long been known as the heart of Scotland, and trips like this one show exactly why. The region offers some of the most varied and accessible walking in the country, from gentle riverside strolls to more challenging hillside routes, and the Braes o’ Killiekrankie ticks plenty of boxes for walkers of all abilities.
The club regularly organises group outings across Scotland, giving members the chance to explore new areas while enjoying the social side of walking together. Days like this one, with clear skies over the Perthshire hills, are the ones that tend to stick in the memory long after the boots have been put away.
Looks like a brilliant wee walk! I did that route a couple of years back and absolutely loved it. The scenery up there is just stunning honestly. Makes me want to book a trip up to Scotland again soon!
