A long-standing Cardiff pub that has sat empty for months is finally getting a new lease of life, with plans approved to transform it into a restaurant and residential flats.
The pub on Cowbridge Road East closed its doors earlier in 2025, leaving yet another gap on one of the city’s busiest roads. Empty pubs have become an increasingly familiar sight across Wales, with rising costs and changing drinking habits hitting traditional boozers hard in recent years.
But this one looks set to avoid the fate of so many others that end up boarded up and forgotten. Plans have been given the green light to convert the building into a restaurant on the ground floor, with flats above providing much-needed housing in the area.
Cowbridge Road East runs through Canton and Pontcanna, two of Cardiff’s most popular and well-established neighbourhoods. The road is lined with independent shops, cafes and restaurants, making it one of the more vibrant stretches in the Welsh capital. A new restaurant moving into the old pub site would fit right in with the character of the area.
The conversion of empty pubs into mixed-use developments has become a common solution across Welsh cities and towns as communities try to breathe new life into buildings that might otherwise fall into disrepair. While many locals often feel a sense of loss when a neighbourhood pub closes, the alternative of leaving a building empty for years tends to be far worse for an area.
Bringing residential flats into the upper floors also makes practical sense at a time when Cardiff is under significant pressure to deliver more housing. The city has seen strong demand for homes, particularly in inner-city neighbourhoods that are well connected and close to amenities.
The project represents the kind of practical reuse of existing buildings that planners and housing campaigners have been pushing for. Rather than knocking down and starting from scratch, converting a pub into something the community can still use while adding homes above is seen as a sensible way forward.
No opening date for the new restaurant has been confirmed yet, but with planning now sorted, work on the transformation of the Cowbridge Road East site can move forward.
