A large group of anti-immigration protesters were stopped and contained by police in Glasgow city centre on Tuesday afternoon, as officers moved quickly to manage the demonstration before it could escalate.
The group had gathered on Buchanan Street before making their way towards Charing Cross, with police stepping in to contain them at around 4.20pm. Officers formed a cordon around the protesters to keep the situation under control.
The scenes are the latest in a series of similar demonstrations that have taken place across Scotland in recent weeks, with tensions around immigration and asylum seeker accommodation running high in several parts of the country.
Glasgow has seen a number of flashpoints over the summer, with protests outside hotels being used to house asylum seekers drawing significant police resources. Authorities have been working to keep opposing groups apart and prevent disorder from breaking out on the streets.
Police Scotland has repeatedly urged people to stay away from protests that have the potential to turn violent, and has made clear it will take action against anyone involved in criminal behaviour during demonstrations.
Tuesday’s containment on one of Glasgow’s busiest shopping streets will have caused significant disruption to the public during the late afternoon, with Buchanan Street typically packed with shoppers and commuters at that time of day.
No details have yet been released regarding arrests or any incidents of disorder connected to the demonstration. Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
