Scottish Faith Leaders Join Forces to Demand UK Arms Embargo on Israel

Religious groups from across Scotland have come together to demand the UK Government takes immediate action over what they describe as the illegal occupation of Palestine, calling for an end to arms sales to Israel and the introduction of sweeping sanctions over alleged war crimes.

The coalition of faith leaders represents a broad cross-section of Scotland’s religious communities, with churches, mosques, synagogues and other faith organisations putting aside their differences to speak with one voice on the issue. It is one of the most significant shows of religious unity Scotland has seen on a political matter in recent years.

At the heart of their demands is a call for the UK Government to suspend all arms exports to Israel with immediate effect. Faith leaders argue that British-made weapons should not be used in a conflict where serious human rights violations have been documented, and they say continuing to supply arms makes the UK complicit in the suffering of Palestinian civilians.

Beyond the arms embargo, the groups are pushing for wide-ranging sanctions to be imposed on Israel in response to what they describe as war crimes. The faith leaders say that without meaningful economic and political consequences, there is little incentive for the situation on the ground to change.

Spokespeople for the coalition have been vocal in framing this not as a political issue but as a moral one. They argue that faith communities have a responsibility to speak out when they believe international law is being broken and when civilian lives are at risk. Several leaders have pointed to the scale of casualties in Gaza as the driving force behind their decision to go public with their demands.

The move reflects a growing mood among faith communities in Scotland who feel that conventional diplomatic channels have failed to produce results. Many of the groups involved have been quietly lobbying politicians for months, but say they have seen little meaningful action from Westminster in response.

Scottish politicians have faced increasing pressure from constituents on the issue, with pro-Palestinian sentiment running high in many parts of the country. The intervention from faith leaders is likely to intensify that pressure, given the moral authority that religious voices carry in public debate.

The coalition has written directly to the UK Government setting out their demands and has called on Scottish MPs and MSPs to use whatever influence they have to push for change at a Westminster level. While foreign policy and arms export licensing remain reserved matters outside Holyrood’s control, Scottish politicians can still lobby UK ministers and vote on related legislation at Westminster.

Human rights organisations have welcomed the statement from Scotland’s faith groups, saying that religious communities speaking out adds significant weight to calls that have been made by campaigners for months. Activists have long argued that public pressure from respected institutions is one of the most effective tools available when governments appear reluctant to act.

The faith coalition says it will continue to campaign until it sees concrete action from the UK Government, and has not ruled out further public demonstrations or acts of solidarity with Palestinian communities. For now, though, the message from Scotland’s religious leaders is clear: they want arms sales stopped, sanctions imposed, and an end to what they see as an illegal occupation that has gone on for far too long.

  1. Honestly not sure why faith leaders think this’ll do anything, the government barely listens to its own MPs let alone religious groups. Good on them for trying I suppose but feels a bit pointless tbh.
