If you’ve been glued to The Traitors and secretly wish you could live out your own version of it, there’s a stunning Welsh mansion that might just be your answer.
Ty Mawr, a grand country house tucked away in Wales, is the kind of place that feels like it was built specifically for dramatic accusations, secret alliances, and someone getting dramatically “banished” before dinner. Think sweeping staircases, candlelit dining rooms, and enough shadowy corridors to make even the most innocent guest look suspicious.
The property is available to hire as a group getaway, making it ideal for a murder mystery weekend with friends. Whether you bring your own murder mystery kit or hire a professional events company to run the night, the setting does most of the heavy lifting for you. Walking into a room like this, it’s almost impossible not to start eyeing up your mates and wondering who among them would make the best Traitor.
The house sleeps a large group, which is half the battle when you’re trying to organise an event that actually works. Murder mystery nights live or die on having enough people involved to keep things interesting, and a venue this size means you can invite enough guests to have proper suspects, red herrings, and a few wildcard characters thrown in.
Inside, the rooms are decked out with the kind of traditional country house charm that sets the mood without you having to do much decorating. Dark wood panelling, ornate fireplaces, and grand reception rooms give the whole place a Cluedo-meets-BBC-period-drama energy. It is genuinely hard to stand in the main hall and not feel like you should be clutching a candlestick and pointing fingers.
The grounds are just as impressive. Sprawling gardens and countryside views mean that if your murder mystery spills outside, or if you just need a breather after a particularly heated round of accusations, there’s plenty of space to wander. It also makes for a great backdrop if your group wants to do anything more active during the day before the mystery kicks off in the evening.
For groups who want to go all in, plenty of companies across Wales and the wider UK offer mobile murder mystery packages where actors come to your venue and run the whole event for you. You essentially just show up, play your role, and try not to get framed for a fictional crime. Some packages include costumes, character briefings, and even a three-course dinner woven into the storyline, which takes the pressure off whoever would otherwise be stuck in the kitchen.
The Traitors effect has been massive when it comes to this kind of group entertainment. Since the show exploded in popularity, murder mystery events and Traitors-themed nights have seen a huge surge in bookings across the country. People want that same buzz of paranoia, trust, and betrayal but with their own friends rather than strangers on a television screen.
Wales, with its abundance of historic country houses, castles, and rural estates, is actually one of the best places in Britain to pull something like this off. The landscape and architecture do a lot of the atmospheric work for you in a way that a hired function room in a city centre simply cannot match.
Prices for hiring a property like this will vary depending on the time of year and the size of your group, but split across a decent number of people it can work out surprisingly reasonable for a full weekend away. When you factor in that you’re getting accommodation, a unique experience, and what will almost certainly become a story your friend group retells for years, it starts to look like pretty good value.
If you’ve been looking for an excuse to finally organise that big group trip that everyone keeps talking about but nobody actually books, a murder mystery weekend in a Welsh mansion might be exactly the push you need.
