A young student nurse lost her life after crashing her car in Rogerstone on New Year’s Day while under the influence of both alcohol and cocaine, an inquest has heard.
Gwent Coroner’s Court was told how the collision proved fatal for the trainee nurse, whose death has now prompted a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident happened in Rogerstone, on the outskirts of Newport, in the early hours following New Year’s celebrations. Investigators found that alcohol and cocaine were both present in her system at the time of the crash.
Student nurses are among some of the hardest working people in Welsh healthcare, often juggling demanding placements alongside their studies. The death has shocked those who knew her, as well as the wider community in the area.
The inquest at Gwent Coroner’s Court is examining the full sequence of events that led to the fatal crash, with evidence being heard about the conditions at the time and the level of substances found in the victim’s system.
Rogerstone is a village and community that sits just to the west of Newport in south Wales, and the crash is understood to have caused significant distress locally.
Drug driving and drink driving remain serious concerns on Welsh roads, particularly around major holidays like New Year when emergency services across the country brace for an increase in incidents. South Wales and Gwent police forces regularly run campaigns warning drivers about the dangers of getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs.
Cocaine in particular is known to affect a driver’s ability to judge speed and distance, while also creating a false sense of confidence. Combined with alcohol, the risks are dramatically increased.
The coroner’s court will continue to hear evidence as the inquest progresses, with a full conclusion expected to be delivered in due course. The findings could shed further light on the exact cause of the collision and the sequence of events on that New Year’s morning.
The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that drink and drug driving can have, not only for the driver but for families and communities left behind.
