Workers at the famous Flahavan’s oat mill in Waterford are set to vote on industrial action after the company introduced what their union is calling an “unseen and unagreed” policy linked to a pay deal.
Unite the union has confirmed that staff at the Kilmacthomas plant are being balloted after management pushed through a policy that workers say they never got to see or sign off on before it was tied to their pay agreement.
Flahavan’s is one of Ireland’s most recognisable food brands, with the Waterford mill having been in operation for well over two centuries. The company produces some of the country’s most popular porridge oats and has long been considered a staple of Irish breakfast tables.
But behind the scenes, things have gotten tense. Unite says the core issue here is straightforward. Workers agreed to a pay deal, but a separate policy was then attached to that deal without being shown to staff or negotiated with the union beforehand. From the workers’ perspective, they are being asked to accept conditions they never actually agreed to.
This kind of dispute, where the details buried in the fine print of a pay agreement become the flashpoint, can be particularly frustrating for workers. The pay rise itself may not even be in question, but the principle of having something unknown attached to it has pushed the situation toward a ballot.

Management at Flahavan’s has not made any detailed public statement on the dispute so far. Whether both sides can get back around the table and clear up exactly what this policy involves will likely determine whether the situation escalates further or gets resolved quietly.
