A Newport man who went on a chaotic drink-driving spree, hitting nearly 50mph in a 20mph zone and leading police on three separate pursuits, has walked away with a suspended sentence and a driving ban.
The defendant, from Newport, was caught behind the wheel while over the legal alcohol limit and at one point was clocked doing 49mph through a stretch of road where the speed limit is just 20mph. The dangerous speeds were only part of the problem. When officers eventually caught up with him, he turned his anger on them, abusing police during the confrontations.
What made this case stand out was the sheer persistence of it. This was not a single chase that ended quickly. Police had to pursue the driver on three separate occasions, making it a prolonged and dangerous ordeal for officers and anyone else on the roads that day.
The case was heard in court where the full extent of the driving was laid out.
