A CalMac ferry sailing to Ardrossan was hit by two major incidents in quick succession after a man rescued from the sea allegedly made bomb threats to crew members onboard.
The dramatic sequence of events left staff dealing with what the company described as an “unprecedented situation”, with services on the route suspended while emergency services responded.
It started when the crew pulled a man from the water, carrying out a rescue operation before the vessel could continue its journey. But the situation quickly took a serious turn when the man allegedly began making bomb threats directed at staff onboard.
Crew members had to manage the threat while also dealing with a second separate incident at the same time, though full details of that emergency have not yet been confirmed. CalMac acknowledged the pressure their staff were under, praising them for handling an extraordinarily difficult set of circumstances.
Services between Ardrossan and the Isle of Arran were suspended following the incidents as police and emergency services became involved. Passengers on one of the busiest ferry routes in Scotland faced delays and disruption while the situation was brought under control.
CalMac said the combination of events was something their crews had never faced before in quite the same way, calling it unprecedented. The company moved quickly to support staff after what was clearly a traumatic and high-pressure ordeal for everyone working onboard.
Police Scotland confirmed they attended the vessel and that inquiries are ongoing in connection with the alleged threats made to crew. No injuries to staff or passengers have been reported at this stage.
The Ardrossan to Arran route is a lifeline service for island residents, carrying thousands of passengers and vehicles every week. Any disruption tends to have a knock-on effect for communities on Arran who rely on the ferry for everything from food deliveries to medical appointments.
CalMac has faced significant scrutiny in recent years over ageing vessels and service reliability, but this incident puts a spotlight on the very real safety challenges their crews can face out on the water. Rescuing someone from the sea is already a serious and dangerous operation, and to then face alleged threats from that same individual makes the situation all the more alarming.
The ferry operator has not yet released a detailed timeline of exactly how events unfolded, but confirmed that normal services have since resumed on the route following the suspension. Investigations into both incidents are expected to continue in the coming days.
