A Cwmbran man has been handed an 18-week prison sentence after he was caught driving while disqualified, without insurance, and then refused to provide a breath specimen when stopped by police.
The man, from Cwmbran in Torfaen, admitted all three offences when the case came before magistrates. Despite the seriousness of the situation, he reportedly appeared in good spirits when caught, smiling at officers during the stop.
Driving while disqualified is taken seriously by courts across Wales, and this case is no different. A ban exists to keep other road users safe, and getting behind the wheel anyway is seen as a deliberate and calculated decision to ignore that protection.
On top of the disqualification, the driver had no insurance in place. That means anyone involved in a collision with him would have faced serious difficulties getting compensation for injuries or damage. Uninsured driving costs honest motorists across the UK hundreds of pounds a year in higher premiums, as insurers absorb the costs of claims involving uninsured vehicles.
Refusing to provide a breath specimen added another layer to the offending. Police can require a driver to blow into a breathalyser during a lawful stop, and refusing to do so is itself a criminal offence. Courts treat it in a similar way to a drink driving conviction, on the basis that an innocent person would generally have no reason to refuse.
Magistrates clearly took a dim view of the combination of offences. Three separate admissions, each serious on their own, stacked up to a custodial sentence of 18 weeks.

Officers use automatic number plate recognition technology as well as routine patrols to identify vehicles being driven by banned motorists.
For anyone caught driving while disqualified, the consequences go well beyond a further ban. A prison sentence, as seen here, is a real possibility, particularly where there are additional offences involved or where the person has a history of similar behaviour.
The case serves as a reminder that a driving ban is not something courts or police treat lightly. Getting behind the wheel while disqualified is not a minor lapse in judgement. It is a deliberate choice to break the law, and the justice system in Wales, as elsewhere, is increasingly willing to respond with immediate custody.
