Newport Man Who Threatened Police With Crossbow Faces Sentencing

A 21-year-old man from Newport who threatened police officers with a crossbow is set to be sentenced today.

Ben Bray appeared before the court after an alarming incident in which he pointed the weapon at officers, leaving them facing a terrifying standoff. The case has drawn significant attention given the dangerous nature of the confrontation.

Crossbows have become an increasingly concerning weapon in Wales and across the UK, with calls from police and politicians to tighten laws around their sale and ownership. Unlike firearms, crossbows can currently be bought legally in the UK by anyone over the age of 18 without a licence, something critics argue makes them far too easy to obtain.

The incident involving Bray put officers in an incredibly dangerous position. Police responding to a call are rarely equipped or prepared to deal with a weapon of that kind, and the psychological impact on officers who face such threats can be lasting.

Bray has admitted to the offence and today a judge will decide what punishment fits the crime. Threatening a police officer with any weapon is treated seriously by the courts, and the use of a crossbow, capable of firing bolts at lethal speed, is likely to weigh heavily in sentencing considerations.

The case comes at a time when the debate around crossbow legislation in the UK is heating up. Following several high-profile attacks in recent years, including fatal incidents, campaigners have been pushing for stricter controls. The Welsh Government and MPs have both been urged to back tougher measures to keep the weapons out of the wrong hands.

For the officers involved in the Newport incident, the moment Bray raised that crossbow will not be easily forgotten. Policing in Wales, as elsewhere, carries real risks, and cases like this serve as a stark reminder of the dangers officers face on an ordinary shift.

Sentencing is expected to take place this afternoon.
