Police and Councils Join Forces in Harehills Crackdown to Clean Up the Streets

A major multi-agency operation hit the streets of Harehills in Leeds on Tuesday 6th October 2026, with police and local partners teaming up for a Public Spaces Protection Order day of action aimed at making the area safer and cleaner for residents.

The coordinated effort brought together West Yorkshire Police alongside council officers and other partner agencies, all working under the powers granted by the PSPO that covers the Harehills area. These orders give authorities the tools to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour, environmental issues, and other problems that can make life difficult for people living and working in a neighbourhood.

Harehills has long been a community that residents have fought hard to improve, and days of action like this one are designed to show that the authorities are listening. Rather than relying on reactive policing alone, the PSPO framework allows officers and council teams to get ahead of problems before they escalate, dealing with everything from illegal dumping and street drinking to nuisance vehicles and drug-related activity in public spaces.

Officers were visible throughout the area during the operation, carrying out checks, engaging with the public, and enforcing the conditions set out under the order. The presence of multiple agencies working side by side sends a clear message to anyone using public spaces irresponsibly that the area is being actively monitored and that action will be taken.

For local residents, operations like this one can make a real difference to day-to-day life. Harehills is a densely populated part of east Leeds with a diverse and tight-knit community, and many people who live there have spoken out in the past about wanting their streets to feel safe and welcoming. The PSPO day of action is part of a broader, ongoing commitment to delivering that.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed the operation was considered a success, with the partnership approach proving effective in covering more ground and addressing a wider range of issues than police could tackle alone. Council enforcement teams were able to deal with environmental concerns such as fly-tipping and waste, while officers focused on behavioural issues and any criminal activity identified during the day.

PSPOs have become an increasingly common tool for local authorities and police forces across England looking to protect communities from behaviour that damages quality of life. Unlike criminal sanctions, they offer a more flexible response, allowing specific restrictions to be put in place in defined areas based on what is actually causing harm in that location.

The Harehills PSPO reflects the particular challenges faced in that part of Leeds, and the day of action was an opportunity to put those powers to work in a visible and coordinated way. Agencies involved said the operation helped build intelligence about ongoing issues in the area and strengthened working relationships between teams who will continue to collaborate going forward.

Residents are encouraged to report concerns about anti-social behaviour or environmental issues in Harehills through West Yorkshire Police or Leeds City Council, so that problems can be picked up and acted on between larger operations like this one.
