Newport got a taste of Bourbon Street last week when the legendary Hot 8 Brass Band rolled into town and delivered one of the most electrifying live performances the city has seen in years.
The New Orleans outfit, who have been flying the flag for traditional brass band music for over two decades, brought their full-throttle sound to the Corn Exchange and left the crowd absolutely buzzing. From the moment they launched into their first number, it was clear this was going to be something special.
The Hot 8 have always been about more than just music. Their story is one of survival, resilience and community. Born out of the streets of New Orleans in the mid-90s, the band has weathered tragedy, including the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the loss of several members over the years. Yet they keep going, keep touring, and keep bringing that unmistakable sound to new audiences around the world.
And Newport was ready for them.
The Corn Exchange filled up nicely on the night, with a crowd that ranged from die-hard brass band enthusiasts to curious newcomers who had simply heard the buzz and decided to show up. By the end of the first song, everyone in the room was moving.
What makes the Hot 8 so hard to ignore is the sheer physicality of what they do. This is not background music. It grabs you by the collar. The tuba lays down a low-end rumble that you feel in your chest, the snare and bass drums drive everything forward with relentless energy, and the horns weave in and out with a looseness that sounds effortless but clearly takes years to master.
Their set pulled from across their catalogue, mixing original material with the kind of second-line classics that have soundtracked New Orleans celebrations for generations. There were moments of genuine tenderness tucked in among the high-energy numbers, a reminder that brass band music carries real emotional weight alongside all that joy.
The crowd interaction was a big part of the night too. The band have a natural warmth about them on stage, clearly enjoying themselves and feeding off the energy in the room. Newport gave it back in spades, with people dancing in whatever space they could find and the noise levels rising as the night went on.
For a city that has been quietly building its reputation as a destination for quality live music, this was another feather in the cap. Newport might not always get the credit it deserves compared to Cardiff, but nights like this show exactly what the city is capable of when the right act comes to town.
The Hot 8 Brass Band are the real deal. Seeing them live is a reminder of what music can do when it is played with conviction, skill and genuine soul. Newport was lucky to have them.
