Cheeky Monkey Luka Makes Great Escape Before Heading Home at Highland Wildlife Park

A Japanese macaque called Luka gave staff at a Highland wildlife park a bit of a headache on Wednesday after making a bold bid for freedom from his enclosure.

Luka, who lives at the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie in the Cairngorms, managed to slip out of his enclosure during the day, sending keepers into action to track him down and get him safely back where he belongs.

The good news is that Luka did not get far. The cheeky macaque eventually made his way back to his enclosure on his own, much to the relief of staff at the park, which is run by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.

Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys, are hardy and resourceful animals. Native to Japan, they are famous for being the most northerly living non-human primates on the planet, well adapted to cold climates. So in some ways, the Scottish Highlands is not the worst place for one to go wandering. The rugged terrain and chilly temperatures would not have bothered Luka one bit.

The Highland Wildlife Park is home to a wide range of animals, many of them species that are either native to Scotland or are adapted to cold and mountainous environments. Alongside the macaques, visitors can see wolves, polar bears, snow leopards and a host of other animals. The park attracts thousands of visitors every year and sits in a stunning setting within the Cairngorms National Park.

Escapes like this, while stressful for keepers, are not entirely unheard of in wildlife parks. Animals are curious and intelligent, and enclosures have to be constantly maintained and monitored to make sure there are no weak points. For a species as agile and clever as the Japanese macaque, even a small gap or structural issue can be all the opportunity they need.

Staff at the park will no doubt be carrying out checks on Luka’s enclosure to figure out exactly how he got out and make sure it cannot happen again. For now though, Luka is back safe and sound, and the whole episode ended without any harm coming to the animal or anyone else.

The park has not yet confirmed full details of how Luka managed his escape or how long he was on the loose before returning, but the fact that he came back on his own suggests he was not too bothered about heading off into the wild Highlands for good.

For anyone planning a visit to the Highland Wildlife Park, it is well worth a trip. Situated just outside Kingussie, it offers a unique chance to see some incredible animals up close in a setting that genuinely feels wild. Just do not be surprised if one of the macaques is eyeing up the fence.
