Aberystwyth University has put the brakes on its ambitious £53 million plan to transform the iconic Old College building, citing rising costs as the main reason for the delay.
The university announced it will carry out a full review of the project before deciding how to move forward. The scheme had been set to turn the historic seafront building into a hotel and museum, breathing new life into one of Wales’s most recognisable landmarks.
Old College sits right on Aberystwyth’s promenade and has been a defining feature of the town for well over a century. Originally built as a hotel in the 1860s before becoming the first home of the University of Wales, the Gothic building has stood largely unused in recent years and has been crying out for investment.
