Sinn Féin TD Named as Chair of Charity Under Criminal Investigation

Sinn Féin has confirmed that one of its Dublin TDs, Aengus Ó Snodaigh, is the chairperson of a charity currently under criminal investigation by authorities.

Liberty Recycling, a Dublin-based charity, has come under scrutiny following a series of asset seizures connected to a criminal probe. The investigation has raised serious questions about the organisation and how it has been operating.

Ó Snodaigh, a long-serving TD for Dublin South-Central, has been involved with Liberty Recycling for around 25 years. Sinn Féin has been keen to stress that there is absolutely no suggestion the TD himself is implicated in whatever is being investigated, and that he is not a target of the probe in any way.

Still, the revelation puts the party in an awkward position. Having one of its elected representatives chairing a charity that is now the subject of a criminal investigation is not a comfortable headline, regardless of any personal wrongdoing on his part.

Liberty Recycling has operated in working class communities in Dublin for many years, positioning itself as a social enterprise focused on recycling and community benefit. The charity model, which combines environmental work with community employment, has been a familiar part of the Dublin landscape for decades.

The details of exactly what investigators are looking at have not been fully made public, but the seizures connected to the probe suggest authorities have been building a case for some time. Asset seizures of this kind typically indicate that investigators believe proceeds of crime or financial irregularities may be involved, though the full picture remains unclear at this stage.

Ó Snodaigh is one of Sinn Féin’s most recognisable figures in Dublin. He has served as a TD since 2002 and has held various roles within the party over the years, including a stint as Ceann Comhairle. His long association with community organisations in his constituency has been a central part of his political identity.

The fact that he has been involved with Liberty Recycling for a quarter of a century suggests his connection to the charity predates his political career in many respects, and his supporters will point to that long track record as context for his role there.

However, as chairperson, Ó Snodaigh sits at the top of the charity’s governance structure, which means questions about oversight and accountability are likely to follow, even if he personally is cleared of any involvement in wrongdoing.

Sinn Féin has not indicated whether Ó Snodaigh intends to step back from his role at the charity while the investigation continues. That decision could become increasingly significant depending on how the probe develops and what further details emerge publicly.

The story adds to a broader conversation in Ireland about governance standards within the charity sector, an area that has faced increased scrutiny in recent years following a number of high-profile controversies involving how some organisations are run and how funds are managed.

For now, Ó Snodaigh has not been accused of any wrongdoing, and that distinction matters. But the investigation into Liberty Recycling is ongoing, and with a sitting TD’s name now firmly attached to the story, it is unlikely to fade quietly from public attention.
