Welsh Student Describes Skin Cream Withdrawal As Feeling Like Being Electrocuted Every Second

A Welsh student has spoken out about the agonising effects of topical steroid withdrawal, saying the condition left him bedbound and feeling like he was being electrocuted around the clock.

Meilir Rowlands, 21, had been using prescription steroid creams to manage his skin condition for years, but when he stopped using them, his body reacted in ways he never could have imagined. What followed was months of relentless pain, sleepless nights, and a life put completely on hold.

“At my lowest point it felt like I was being electrocuted every second,” Meilir said. “It was constant. There was no break from it.”

Topical steroid withdrawal, sometimes called red skin syndrome, is a condition that can develop when people who have used steroid creams for prolonged periods stop using them. The skin, which has become dependent on the medication, essentially goes into a kind of shock. Symptoms can include intense burning, redness, swelling, and nerve pain that many sufferers describe as unbearable.

For Meilir, the condition was completely debilitating. He found himself stuck in bed, unable to carry out basic daily tasks, and watching his normal student life disappear. Simple things like getting dressed or having a shower became enormous challenges. Sleep was almost impossible when the pain was at its worst.

The condition is still not widely recognised by all medical professionals, which means many sufferers spend a long time not knowing what is happening to them or why. Patients are often told their original skin condition has simply flared up, rather than being told they may be experiencing withdrawal from the medication itself. This lack of awareness can make the whole experience even more isolating, because people are struggling without a clear diagnosis or a clear path forward.

Meilir has been open about his experience in the hope that more people will become aware of the condition, and that medical professionals will take it more seriously. He wants others going through the same thing to know they are not alone, and that what they are feeling is real.

The number of people coming forward with similar stories has been growing in recent years, with online communities of topical steroid withdrawal sufferers sharing their experiences and supporting each other through what can be an extremely long recovery process. For some people, full recovery can take a year or more, and the journey is rarely straightforward.

Campaigners and patient groups have been pushing for greater recognition of the condition within the NHS, arguing that clearer guidance needs to be given to both doctors and patients about the risks of long-term steroid cream use. They say that patients should be properly informed before being prescribed these medications, and that there needs to be better support available for those who do experience withdrawal.

For Meilir, the road to recovery has been slow and difficult, but he has been determined to raise awareness and make sure other young people do not go through the same experience without understanding what is happening to them. His story is a reminder that medications which are handed out routinely can sometimes have serious consequences that do not get nearly enough attention.
