A Welsh man died after bleeding out from a savage dog bite to his leg inflicted by an American XL Bully in a family garden, a court has heard.
Keven Jones suffered a fatal wound when the dog bit him on the leg while he was in his daughter-in-law’s garden. Despite efforts to save him, Jones bled to death from his injuries.
The case has been brought before the courts as proceedings examine the circumstances surrounding the attack and who, if anyone, bears responsibility for the tragedy.
American XL Bullies were banned in Wales and the rest of Great Britain in February 2024 after a string of horrific attacks, including the death of Ian Price in Staffordshire in September 2023. The Welsh and UK governments moved quickly to add the breed to the list of prohibited dogs under the Dangerous Dogs Act, meaning owners were required to have their animals neutered, microchipped, and kept on a lead and muzzled in public, or have them put down.
The ban came too late for Keven Jones.
XL Bullies became one of the most talked about dog breeds in Britain over recent years, initially popular for their muscular build and loyal temperament with owners. But a growing number of serious attacks raised alarm among animal welfare experts, police, and politicians. Critics argued for years that the breed posed an unacceptable risk, particularly around children and vulnerable adults.

Emergency responders and medical teams face an incredibly difficult task in such situations, and sadly not every victim survives long enough to receive the care they need.

For many families across Wales, the ban on XL Bullies brought relief. But for the Jones family, that legislation came too late. Keven Jones lost his life in what should have been the safe and familiar surroundings of a family garden, a detail that makes this case all the more heartbreaking.
