The Falkland Islands government has launched an official plea to football’s global governing body, FIFA, following a highly provocative display by members of the Argentinian national team. In the emotional aftermath of their 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over England, several Argentinian players brandished a controversial banner declaring “The Falklands are Argentinian.”
The incident, which took place on the pitch during post-match celebrations, has sparked widespread anger across the British Overseas Territory and the United Kingdom. The provocative banner, bearing the Spanish translation “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” represents a direct challenge to British sovereignty and the self-determination of the islands’ inhabitants.

UK politicians have quickly rallied behind the Falkland Islanders, calling on the Football Association to support the complaint to FIFA. Several Members of Parliament have labeled the Argentinian team’s behavior as unprofessional and deliberately inflammatory, especially given the historical context of the match against England.
