Katherine Jenkins Reveals Shocking Press Threats Early In Her Career

Welsh classical singer Katherine Jenkins has opened up about the dark side of fame, revealing that a newspaper once threatened to “trash her” during the early days of her career. The Neath-born mezzo-soprano says the experience left her completely staggered and shed light on the kind of treatment young women in the music industry faced not so long ago.

Jenkins, who rose to fame in the early 2000s and became one of the best-selling classical artists in the world, said the threat came at a time when she was still finding her feet in the industry. A newspaper, which she did not name, made it clear they had the power to destroy her reputation if she did not play ball. For a young woman just starting out, that kind of pressure was enormous.

Speaking candidly, Jenkins described being left speechless by some of the questions she was asked during that period. The line of questioning, she suggested, would simply not happen in the same way today. Times have changed, but her experience reflects a culture that many women in entertainment had to quietly navigate for years.

The Neath singer has always maintained a polished public image, but comments like these give a rare glimpse behind the curtain. Jenkins has sold over 12 million albums worldwide and has performed for presidents, royalty and at some of the biggest events on the planet. Yet even with that level of success, the early years were not without their pressures and threats.

Jenkins is not the first high-profile woman to speak out about the way the press treated female artists during that era. Across the industry, many women have described being judged more on their appearance than their talent, and facing intrusive or inappropriate questions that their male counterparts simply were not asked. For Jenkins, who trained seriously as a classical singer and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, the focus on her looks over her voice was something she had to deal with repeatedly.

Her comments come at a time when the conversation around how the media treats women, particularly young women in the public eye, has never been more prominent. From reality TV stars to musicians, many have spoken about the lasting impact that press scrutiny had on their mental health and confidence.

Despite those early challenges, Jenkins has built a remarkable career. She has released numerous number one classical albums, appeared on some of the most watched television broadcasts in the world and become a proud ambassador for Wales on the global stage. She regularly performs at major events including the Last Night of the Proms and has become a beloved figure in Welsh culture.

For many in Wales, Jenkins is a source of real pride. She has never shied away from her roots and has spoken frequently about what it means to represent her country. That pride in her Welsh identity has remained a constant throughout a career that has spanned more than two decades.

Her willingness to now speak openly about the less glamorous side of that journey will likely resonate with many. It is a reminder that even the most successful careers are rarely without struggle, and that behind the polished performances and sold-out concerts, there were moments that tested her resolve in ways the public never saw.

  1. Sadly not surprised by this at all. The press were absolutely vile to so many people in the early 2000s and got away with it for years. Hope she’s doing alright now tbh.
