Dorset Wildfire Declared Major Incident as Families Evacuated from Homes

Firefighters are entering their second day of tackling a major wildfire that has ripped through acres of countryside, forcing local residents to evacuate their homes.

Emergency services were called to the scene yesterday afternoon as dry conditions and strong winds caused the flames to spread rapidly across the dry heathland. More than a dozen fire engines and specialist off-road vehicles have been deployed to combat the blaze, which has sent thick plumes of smoke billowing across neighboring towns.

Police established a wide cordon around the area and assisted in the evacuation of several nearby properties as a precautionary measure. Residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed to protect against the heavy smoke.

Local authorities have set up a temporary rest centre for displaced families, while fire crews work tirelessly to establish firebreaks and prevent the flames from reaching residential zones. High temperatures and shifting winds have complicated the containment efforts, with emergency services warning that the operation is likely to continue for several days.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though officials have reiterated warnings to the public about the extreme risks of disposable barbecues and campfires in dry areas during the summer months.

  1. So scary for those families, hope everyone gets out safe. Thoughts with all the locals affected, must be absolutely terrifying watching your home threatened like that. Wonder if enough resources are being directed to areas where the *real* taxpaying residents live though…
